Beauty Fact: Sebum Contains Squalene and Vitamin E

Did you know that sebum contains such potent anti-oxidants as Vitamin E and Squalene?

It is already a known fact that Squalene IS (the one used in cosmetics as a natural moisturizer) a major component of sebum. However Vitamin E presence in sebum is still being researched. Several experimental studies show that sebaceous glands and sebum serve as a transport mechanism taking “the lipophilic antioxidant vitamin E from the blood to the skin surface.” In human skin, the highest level of vitamin E is found in sebum. So it appears that sebum is not only beneficial for the skin due to its coating effect, but it also acts as a natural anti-oxidant substance.
That is why people with oily skin stay looking younger longer. Just look at Posh!

PS: Gals with oily skin stops using harsh cleansers now, do not strip your skin of the vital anti-aginers!

Beauty Talk: Age Factors

Why some people develop certain signs of aging sooner than others? Why some people at the age of 30 are still asked for an ID and others stop caring an ID with them from the age of 16? Why Britney at 26 looks older than Kate Moss at age 34?

There are several major factors that influence how fast we age, as well as how “gracefully” we age. Some of these factors are beyond our powers to do anything about, while others we can influence to stay younger looking longer. So let’s look at them a bit closer:

1. Genes
Gene’s influence on our aging speed and the way we age accounts for 20-40% . For example, it mostly depends on your genes, when or whether you will develop a nasolabial fold. However, research shows that external aging factors still make a much bigger difference. How would they explain Kate Moss phenomenon???

2. Skin Type
Moisture is essential for skin’s optimum functioning. Oily skin has a coating of sebum that prevents it from loosing moisture and, to a certain extent, protects it from the aggressive environment. In fact, sebum is rich in Vitamin E which is a potent anti-oxidant!

3. Race, Culture and Geography
You must have noticed that black and Asian skin generally look younger. Some researchers think it is due to the fact that darker skin has more natural pigment that reflects light and protects skin from sun damage. Culture is also a major aging factor. For example, Italians and Spaniards love to sunbathe and spend a lot of time in the sun. That is why they develop signs of aging earlier than some other nations.

Also if you happen to be fair skinned living in sunny Italy or Greece, you will get as much sun as the native population without having their levels of natural melanin. As a result - you get more sun damage.

4. Bone Structure
Have you noticed that people with high pronounced cheek-bones tend to look younger. I guess it is just a visual effect?!

5. Diet
Healthy diet rich in vitamins, minerals, good fats is a big part of anti-aging strategy. What about calories? Do they make any difference to our aging speed? Here experts seem to disagree. According to numerous studies, low calorie diet helps to stay young longer. However, with age we naturally loose fat tissue supporting the skin and as a result skin starts to sag. That is why extreme no-fat diet results in more sagging and wrinkles. Find the golden middle!

6. Lifestyle
Either it is a stressful job, long nights, smoking, intense partying or alcohol – all of these lifestyle factors add up to your aging speed.

Here you have it! It looks like we can actually influence 50% of these aging factors. Though nowadays, thanks to plastic surgery, changing your bone structure is a possibility as well.

Beauty Fact: Smoking Can Be Worse For your Skin than Sunbathing

Did you know that one puff of a cigarette subjects your body to more free radicals than a UV-dose needed for a suntan?

Most of us know smoking is bad for your health on the whole and for your skin as well. Inhaling tobacco smoke results in restricted blood vessels and, subsequently, reduced amount of blood flow to the skin. As a result your skin is deprived of the vital oxygen and nutrients and soon smokers develop this grey or yellowish complexion.

Another fact related to the nasty habit may make some smokers finally quit. According to German Vogue (Apr 2008), one puff of a cigarette creates over 100 times more free radicals than a UV dose enough to get a suntan. In an interview to Vogue, Professor Dr.Leonhard Zastow, Senior VP of Coty in Monte Carlo, explained that smoking also brings down body’s ability to protect itself against sun damage. Another striking fact is that only 8 hours after your last cigarette oxygen flow in the body comes to normal and only 48 hours later nicotine is completely out of your system. You will have to wait for two more weeks to get back a healthy skin color!

If a smoker is reading this post and has not yet decided to quit, let me rub it in. According to some studies quoted by skincarephysicians.com, statistically smokers develops premature signs of aging much sooner than a non-smoker and even in 20 year old smokers “facial wrinkling, while not yet visible, can be seen under a microscope.

Wow! I am glad I am not a smoker!

Beauty Talk: Sensitive Skin and Makeup

People with sensitive skin very often develop sensitivity to makeup. Well, of coure, all the foundations, powders, eyeshadows and blushes are filled with chemicals that can cause irritation. Even though I personally haven’t developed sensitivity to any of my makeup, I thought it would be a very important topic to cover in my sensitive skin posts.

Sensitive skin reacts with irritation to synthetic dyes, fragrances, sulfates, sillicones, preservatives etc. What kind of makeup doesn’t have these ingredients? The answer is mineral makeup.

Mineral makeup is completely natural. It is produced from the minerals developed from the earth. The true mineral makeup does not contain potential irritants named above. However, there are mineral makeup lines that would, alongside natural ingredients, include various chemicals as well.

Mineral makeup has so many positive points for those who have sensitive skin.

1. Due to elimination of commom makeup irritants, the chance of sensitivity to mineral makeup is much lower.
2. Mineral makeup is so mild to the skin that it can be used after aggressive skin treatments like laser and peels.
3. Certain ingredients in mineral makeup, such as Zinc Oxide, Titanium Dioxide and Allantoin are actually soothing for the skin and are recommended for those suffering from rosacea and acne.
4. Mineral makeup has light texture, is non-comedogenic and doesn’t clog your pores.
5. Mineral makeup has natural SPF UVA-UVB protection. Look for Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide ingredients.

Some drawbacks of mineral makeup you should know about before buying:
1. Those who have dry skin observe that mineral powders can be drying, which on the other hand is good for those with oily skin. Such ingredients in mineral powders and foundations as Kaolin Clay and Rice Powder absorb the excess oil.
2. Mineral makeup shades tend to become darker when applied. This is due to oxidation process. It means you need to be more careful about selecting desired shade or tone.
3. Avoid Bismuth Oxychloride – it is considered a skin irritant.
4. Some concerns have been raised about the “micronized” (pulverized) minerals and a possibility that by dramatically reducing molecules’ size their initial characteristics may be changed and they can obtain some toxic properties.

Since any makeup containing minerals can be named “mineral makeup”, before buying a product I recommend to look at the ingredients and make sure it is truly natural. Remember, there is no guarantee that your sensitive skin won’t react to one of those minerals. But if you have a choice between giving up makeup alltogether and having to try out more than one mineral makeup product in hope to find the one non-irritating, I think it is worth the effort.

Below are some examples of well-known mineral makeup lines and brands.

Top 5 Beauty Habits vs Top 5 Worst Habits for Your Beauty

Top 5 Beauty Habits

1. Wearing SPF every day all year round.
Sun is the main cause of premature aging. Get more out of this great habit by applying SPF not only to your face but décolleté and hands as well!
2. Drinking lots of water daily.
Liquid keeps your whole body and skin well hydrated and balanced!
3. Sleeping no less than 8 hours per day.
Good night sleep gives your skin a chance to regenerate. Maximize the benefits by training yourself to sleep on your back and on a low pillow. This will not only keep your neck and décolleté area looking smooth for longer but will also delay development of a deep nasolabial fold on the side of your face you like to sleep on ;-)
4. Preferring red wine to white wine and green tea to coffee.
Both red wine and green tea are packed with precious anti-oxidants. Red wine, in particular, contains polyphenols and resveratrol, which is known to have anti-cancer, anti-aging and anti-inflammatory properties.
5. Eating lots of vegetables and fruits.
These will provide anti-oxidants and vitamins necessary to protect and preserve your beauty!

Top 5 Worst Habits for your Beauty

1. Smoking and secondhand smoking.
Smoking not only dehydrates your skin, it also constricts capillaries, and limits oxygen and nutrients flow to the skin.
2. Chewing a gum and making faces :-)
Gone are the days when everybody was doing facial exercises to prevent signs of aging. Repetitive facial movements proved to bring lines sooner!
3. Picking pimples and exfoliating your skin too often.
Hands off your skin! Picking pimples can result in scarring and spreading of bacteria. Too much exfoliation lowers skin protective barrier and leaves it more vulnerable to oxidative damage and dehydration.
4. Sunbathing.
Experts say, UVA and UVB rays are the main cause of aging!
5. Indulging into chocolate and all things sweet.
Sugar triggers a process in our bodies known as glycation which results in damaged collagen and elastin fibers.

What other habits would you add to these 2 lists?

    Beauty Term: Dermobiotics

This term was coined by Biotherm from the skin [dermo], cellular life [biotic]. Dermobiotic means probiotics for the skin.

Biotherm, used the term for the first time when they introduced RIDES REPAIR cosmetics to the market. RIDES REPAIR line is based on Pure Thermal Plankton which enhances skin internal defenses against aggressors such as UV exposure and pollution.

Because biological effects on the skin of Pure Thermal Plankton can be compared to the effects that probiotics have on human organism, Pure Thermal Plankton was pronounced the first dermobiotic™

Educate Your Kids About Sun Damage

Previously I posted about sun damage and increased chance of cancer if you start abusing sun and solariums early on. I have to say I am so happy my family did not have enough money to go on vacations when I was little. Thanks God! I had only one chance to turn my fair skin into the color of dark chocolate. I shudder when I look at the photos – my smile has never been so shiny white!
You are responsible for your kids - don’t let them get sun damage.
    1. Start with protecting their skin early on. Babies have very sensitive tender skin that is so susceptible to UVA and UVB rays. Protect your precious baby by applying specially formulated sunscreens. To make sure your baby doesn’t have irritation go with a physical sunscreen not chemical.
    2. Keep up regular sun protection and your kid will develop a habit of it that may save his or her life.
    3. When you think your kid is old enough to understand, explain to your kid about the danger of UVA and UVB rays and about cancer.
    4. If you have a teenager who doesn’t want to listen to your concerns some of the things you may do is
    - take him/her to a dermatologist for skin examination and request the expert to show photos of sun damaged skin vs healthy skin and to explain about UVA/UVB danger. Or you can find such photos on the internet yourself.
    - explain about premature aging and show photos of aged skin with sun spots and deep lines. Who wants to look so mottled and wrinkled?!
A couple efforts to develop healthy sun-protection habits in your children will ensure they have healthy skin and will preserve its youth long into adulthood.

Beauty Tip: Don't Drink, Don't Smoke, Stay Away From Sweets

No matter how often people talk about beauty being superficial, it is simply not true. Skin’s beauty is not just about the creams and makeup we layer on it, most of it comes from within. That’s why it is so important how well you take care of your body.

Smoking is a well known enemy of skin. It destroys collagen and elastin, causes broken capillaries and oxygen deficiency in your skin. Did you know that one puff of a cigarette creates over 100 times more free radicals than a UV dose enough to get a suntan? So if you want to have young looking healthy skin longer, quit now!

Moving on to all things sweet. Life without chocolate would be unbearable. But what you should know is that sweets can actually accelerate aging. When sugar gets into our blood, it turns into glucose and binds with protein or lipid molecules. This process is called glycation. Unfortunately, glycation directly impacts such vital proteins in our skin as collagen and elastin. As a result skin becomes stiff and loses its elasticity which leads to the formation of wrinkles. Solution is as simple as that – do not indulge into sweets and simple carbohydrates.

Alcohol is not very often mentioned among skin damaging factors. However it is a known fact that more than one glass of alcohol increases inflammation in the bloodstream. Inflammation means quicker aging. So make sure to count your glasses!

Top 5 Beauty Vitamins and Minerals

I will repeat what I have said so many times before: beauty comes not only from the bottoms of expensive cream jars but from the bottoms of our dinner plates as well, i.e. from a healthy balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals. So here is Top 5 Beauty Vitamins and Minerals you may want to look out for to include into your diet to have healthy and young looking skin as long as possible. Some of these vitamins are also great when used topically.
Vitamin C: a very powerful anti-oxidant. Not only does it protect skin cells from free radicals it also helps collagen formation.
Vitamin E: another antioxidant that guards cells from free radical damage and helps to soothe and heal stressed skin. Vitamin E has shown to reduce sunburn and help to heel wounds. Due to the fact that Vitamin E is fat soluble, it gets easily absorbed and stored by the skin.
Zinc: Zinc is necessary for DNA repair, collagen and elastin production in the skin. That is why it is critically important for healthy skin function. It helps heal blemishes, reduces inflammation and helps to fight acne.
Alpha lipoic acid: a very special antioxidant as it is water and fat soluble. This means that it is able to get to every cell in your body! This acid also helps to regenerate other oxidants like Vitamin E, Vitamin C, Gluthathione and Coenzyme Q10.
Bioflavonoids: natural anti-oxidant free-radical scavengers. Bioflavonoids work in synergy with other antioxidants like Vitamin E, ascorbate (Vitamin C), carotene (Vitamin A) and Selenium to reduce damage to the cells caused by oxidation. Flavonoids have also been found to help in maintaining the thin walls of the capillaries, promote circulation and have an antibacterial effect.

There are much more than just 5 beauty vitamins! So I have to mention such vitamins and minerals as Vitamin A, Vitamin B, Omega-3 fatty acid and Magnesium - all of them contribute the healthy functioning of the skin cells and should be present in your beauty diets!

    Obagi Medical Products

Recently browsing internet in search of some effective serious skin care line I came across information about Obagi Medical and I got curious about a skin care line that’s available only through dermatologists. Hey, that’s serious, right!? Here is what I found out. Obagi Medical though news to me, is not at all new… it has actually been founded in 1990s by Zein Obagi, MD, a dermatologist. His approach to skin care has been criticized by some and loved by others. Today Obagi Medical is a well known popular skin care brand.

What is special about Obagi products is that they offer a multi-step system approach to treating various skin issues like signs of aging, hyperpigmentation, acne etc. Obagi skin care systems allow to adjust treatments depending on the patient’s response to products as well as to adjust intensity as the treatment progresses.

Obagi offers several lines. For example, Nu-Derm system is a corrective system and addresses signs of photodamage. Condition and Enhance System works to prevent future damage. ClenziDerm System fights acne.

I found Obagi products’ concept very logical and would like to try it myself. What about you? Have you ever used Obagi products?

Quick Fix: Toothpaste Helps to Get Rid of Orangey Palms!

I cam across this tip in Cosmo and thought you may like it as much as I did. You know how pals get all orange after you apply self-tanner. It appears whitening toothpaste can fix this problem! I would have never thought of this! It should contain peroxide and silica. The peroxide helps to lighten the tint and silica exfoliates the top layer of skin. Just put a small amount on your palms rub together a little and then wash it off! That’s smart!

Up to a third of breast cancers could be avoided

BARCELONA, Spain – Up to a third of breast cancer cases in Western countries could be avoided if women ate less and exercised more, researchers at a conference said Thursday, renewing a sensitive debate about how lifestyle factors affect the disease.

Better treatments, early diagnosis and mammogram screenings have dramatically slowed breast cancer, but experts said the focus should now shift to changing behaviors like diet and physical activity.

"What can be achieved with screening has been achieved. We can't do much more," Carlo La Vecchia, head of epidemiology at the University of Milan, said in an interview. "It's time to move on to other things."

La Vecchia spoke Thursday at a European breast cancer conference in Barcelona. He cited figures from the International Agency for Research on Cancer, which estimates that 25 to 30 percent of breast cancer cases could be avoided if women were thinner and exercised more. The agency is part of the World Health Organization.

His comments are in line with recent health advice that lifestyle changes in areas such as smoking, diet, exercise and sun exposure can play a significant role in risk for several cancers.

Dr. Michelle Holmes of Harvard University, who has studied cancer and lifestyle factors, said people might wrongly think their chances of getting cancer depend more on their genes than their lifestyle.

"The genes have been there for thousands of years, but if cancer rates are changing in a lifetime, that doesn't have much to do with genes," she told The Associated Press in a phone interview from Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women. In Europe, there were about 421,000 new cases and nearly 90,000 deaths in 2008, the latest available figures. The United States last year saw more than 190,000 new cases and 40,000 deaths.

A woman's lifetime chance of getting breast cancer is about one in eight. Obese women are up to 60 percent more likely to develop any cancer than normal-weight women, according to a 2006 study by British researchers.

Many breast cancers are fueled by estrogen, a hormone produced in fat tissue. So experts suspect that the fatter a woman is, the more estrogen she's likely to produce, which could in turn fuel breast cancer. Even in slim women, experts believe exercise can help reduce the cancer risk by converting more fat into muscle.

Yet any discussion of weight and breast cancer is considered sensitive because some may misconstrue that as the medical establishment blaming women for their disease.

Tara Beaumont, a clinical nurse specialist at Breast Cancer Care, a British charity, said her agency has always been careful about giving lifestyle advice. She noted that three of the major risk factors for breast cancer — gender, age and family history — are clearly beyond anyone's control.

"It is incredibly difficult to isolate specific factors. Therefore women should in no way feel that they are responsible for developing breast cancer," she said.

Yet Karen Benn, a spokeswoman for Europa Donna, a patient-focused breast cancer group, said it was impossible to ignore the increasingly stronger links between lifestyle and breast cancer.

"If we know there are healthier choices, we can't not recommend them just because people might misinterpret the advice and feel guilty," she said. "If we are going to prevent breast cancer, then this message needs to get out, particularly to younger women."

That means avoiding becoming overweight as an adult. Robert Baan, a cancer expert with the international cancer research agency, said it isn't clear if women who lose weight can lower their risk to the level of a woman who was never fat.

The American Cancer Society Web site says the connection between weight and cancer risk is complex. It says risk appears to increase for women who gain weight as adults, but not for women who have been overweight since childhood. The cancer society recommends 45 to 60 minutes of physical activity five or more days a week to reduce the risk of breast cancer.

Drinking less alcohol might also help. Experts estimate that having more than a couple of drinks a day can boost the risk of breast cancer by 4 to 10 percent.

After studies several years ago linked hormone-replacement therapy to cancer, millions of women abandoned the treatment, leading to a sharp drop in breast cancer rates. Experts said a similar reduction might be seen if women ate healthier and exercised more.

Holmes, the Harvard expert, said changing diet and nutrition is arguably easier than tackling other breast cancer risk factors.

In the 1980s and 1990s, breast cancer rates steadily increased, paralleling a rise in obesity and the use of estrogen-containing hormones after menopause.

La Vecchia said countries like Italy and France — where obesity rates have been stable for the past two decades — show that weight can be controlled at a population level.

"It's hard to lose weight, but it's not impossible," he said. "The potential benefit of preventing cancer is worth it."

1 food that can help you sleep and 5 that might not

Since I’ve become a mom, it’s a challenge for me to get enough sleep. It’s become harder for me to fall asleep because I’m thinking about work, the baby, all the stuff that needs to be done around the house, what to make for dinner the next night...and the list goes on. (At least I’ve got a handle on the dinner thing—I either make one of these cheap, 30-minute dinner recipes or make a super-easy meal in my slow cooker.)

I’m not OK with getting less than the recommended 8 to 9 hours per night, since sleep is so important to my health and my figure (research links weight gain with sleep loss). (Find 5 foods that do the weight-loss work for you here.)

So in the interest of giving myself the best chance for a good night’s sleep (especially with the spring time change), I took a look at advice from EatingWell Nutrition Advisory Board member Dr. Rachel Johnson on which foods and drinks can help promote better sleep. Here’s what the research says:

Carbohydrate-Rich Dinners (This one works!): A light bedtime snack can stave off hunger, a known sleep robber. But eating quickly-digested carbs (a.k.a, “high-glycemic-index” or “GI” carbohydrates such as jasmine rice) hours earlier at dinner—might also help. A study found that when healthy sleepers ate carbohydrate-rich suppers of veggies and tomato sauce over rice, they fell asleep significantly faster at bedtime if the meal included high-GI jasmine rice rather than lower-GI long-grain rice. The study authors speculated that the high-GI meals triggered greater amounts of insulin, which increased the ratio of tryptophan relative to other amino acids in the blood, allowing proportionately more to get into the brain and make people drowsy.

Warm Milk: Decades ago, scientists looked into this folk remedy and posited that tryptophan, an amino acid in milk (and turkey), might be responsible for its supposed sleep-inducing effects. Earlier research had shown that when tryptophan is released into the brain, it produces serotonin—a serenity-boosting neurotransmitter. But when milk (and other tryptophan-rich foods) were tested, they failed to affect sleep patterns, perhaps because other amino acids in those foods competed with tryptophan to get into the brain. Warm milk at bedtime may be comforting, but it won’t boost sleep-promoting serotonin.

Herbal Tea: Chamomile, lemon balm, hops and passionflower are all touted for their sleep-promoting properties. You’ll often find them in “sleep-formula” tea blends, but unfortunately their effectiveness hasn’t been proven in clinical studies, according to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. Some experts say that these teas may work for some, and a warm liquid before bed may make you sleepy by generating body heat. That said, a cup of “sleep-time” tea might be worth a try.

Caffeine: Caffeine affects everyone differently, so if you’re sensitive it might be worth trying to cut down—or limit caffeine to the morning only. This can mean more than just cutting out a cup of coffee. The major sources of caffeine in Americans’ diets are coffee (71 percent), soft drinks (16 percent) and teas (12 percent) but chocolate is also a source. Our ability to excrete caffeine decreases with age so while you might have tolerated four cups of coffee a day when you were 20, you’ll probably need to cut down as you get older. Cut down on caffeine or limit it to the morning; if insomnia persists, consider going cold turkey. Try this drink to cure a headache & 4 more home remedies for common ailments.

Sleep Supplements: Shelves in supplement stores are stacked with sleep formulas. According to one NIH survey conducted in 2002, 1.6 million people tried complementary or alternative therapies like these, and over half of them reported their insomnia improved “a great deal.” However, those glowing anecdotes haven’t been backed up by rigorous scientific study; evaluations of most nutritional supplements haven’t shown any effects whatsoever. The one exception is valerian root, which seemed to help improve sleep (with rare, and mild, side effects, such as stomach upset). But finding an effective formulation of valerian root is tricky, since the FDA doesn’t regulate herbal supplements. Don’t waste your money on sleep supplements; hold off on using valerian until standardized formulations become available.

Can Coffee Reduce The Risk Of Diabetes?

Diabetes is a disease in which the body does not produce or properly use insulin. Insulin is a hormone that is needed to convert sugar, starches and other food into energy needed for daily life. The cause of diabetes continues to be a mystery, although both genetics and environmental factors such as obesity and lack of exercise appear to play roles.

    Coffee reduces risk of diabetes

Research suggests that people who drink coffee are less likely to get type 2 diabetes. It isn't known whether the caffeine or some other ingredient in coffee is responsible for its protective effects.

The researchers wanted to see whether there is a link between diabetes and drinking coffee and green, black, and oolong tea. Participants completed a detailed questionnaire about their health, lifestyle habits, and how much coffee and tea they drank. The questionnaire was repeated at the end of the 5-year follow-up period.

When other factors were accounted for, researchers found that the more green tea and coffee participants drank, the less likely they were to get diabetes. People who drank six cups or more of green tea or three or more cups of coffee each day were about one-third less likely to get diabetes. The link was stronger in women than in men. No pattern was seen with black or oolong tea. (see Diabetes Symptoms)

Vitamin D and Calcium May Lower the Risk for Type 2 Diabetes in Women

A lack of vitamin D and calcium may be linked to getting type 2 diabetes. More than 80,000 women who took part in the Nurses' Health Study. Over the course of 20 years, over 4,800 women developed type 2 diabetes. The researchers found that a combined intake of over 1,200 milligrams of calcium and over 800 units of vitamin D was linked with a 33% lower risk for type 2 diabetes (as compared to women who took much smaller amounts of calcium and vitamin D). The results show that consuming higher amounts of vitamin D and calcium help lower the risk for type 2 diabetes in women.

Diabetes is a disorder characterized by hyperglycemia or elevated blood glucose (blood sugar). Our bodies function best at a certain level of sugar in the bloodstream. If the amount of sugar in our blood runs too high or too low, then we typically feel bad. Diabetes is the name of the condition where the blood sugar level consistently runs too high. Diabetes is the most common endocrine disorder.

We all want a perfect smile and know that it can definitely help land that big sale or contract or even get that pay raise or new job. But, except for a very few, most of us are not born with perfect or even anywhere near close to perfect teeth.

Most of us have some crooked teeth, a little discoloration, a chip or two, maybe a gap or even a missing tooth. Basically, 90% or more of us could really use a complete dental makeover and it is so expensive and so outrageous a concept that it really never crosses our mind as it is disregarded as an impossibility. That is now changing as dental porcelain veneers are quickly becoming cheaper and a great, quick alternative with massive life altering results.

It used to be that for people with crooked and bad teeth they either had to have extensive dental surgery, braces and orthodontics (which will not help as much in adults as it does in youth), or resort to going through life without smiling or hiding their teeth and having a much lower self esteem.

Dental surgery, braces and orthodontics are quite expensive and much of it is not covered under insurance plans. For less money, one can now have thin porcelain veneers applied to their teeth and this can instantly correct misaligned and crooked teeth. It can also whiten the frontal 16 to 20 teeth (what is usually treated) and make them look like a stars mouth with a perfect or near perfect smile.

Basically what a dentist or oral surgeon will do for cosmetic porcelain veneers is they will first do a thorough and deep cleaning of your teeth. After this they will use a grinding or abrasion tool and effectively remove about 1 to 2 mm of surface area on your teeth which are to receive the veneers (the back teeth will not usually be veneered as no one can see them when you talk or smile).

After this, and not before, they will make impressions of your teeth. There are several different methods and kits by different manufacturers used to do this but the results are the same. These impressions will be used to make the veneers. The reason for the grinding down of the surface of the teeth is to provide a better bonding surface and to provide room for correction of crooked or misaligned teeth.

The dentist or oral surgeon does not make the actual veneers. They are outsourced to medical companies that specifically specialize in dental veneers. It is quite interesting to note that the porcelain dental veneers are actually quite fragile until installed and properly bonded or cemented to the teeth. Then they are very strong and are pretty much as strong or even stronger than your original teeth.

It is far less often that a dental veneer gets broken or chipped than as with real teeth. So, once you have them installed you can pretty much enjoy your new smile and look without a whole lot of worries.

Beauty Tips Look Younger, Live Longer and Feel Younger

In this age of baby boomers, generation X, and generation Y, there are many of us who would like to retain our youthful appearance. But it isn’t always about “the looks”, or maybe it is more accurate to say that looks can be deceiving, don’t judge a book by its’ cover. My favorite has always been, true beauty comes from within. I really believe that is true. When you meet someone who has a sparkle in their eyes, they tend to look younger than their age. Someone who laughs and enjoys life, looks and feels younger. There is a lightness in their step, attitude and spirit. There is a sense of pleasure being in their presence, a joyfulness that surrounds them.

I have a woman friend who exudes those qualities. She is an art therapist, in her later fifties, works with extremely troubled youths in a lock up facility, and she refuses to grow old. Every time I am in her presence, I feel like a more joyful, happy person. We laugh over the silliest, dumbest things. She loves to have fun!! She has graying hair, and her shape is starting to sag, but boy is she a blast to be around!

You can look younger without surgery, it’s easy….just laugh more!

I’m often mistaken for being much younger then my birth years. I am soon to be forty-seven and usually get pegged in the mid thirties, even by friends who have known me for a while. An example of that is just the other day I was at the beach with my children, and I was talking with a friend, who I have known for several years. We were talking about menopausal symptoms and she said, “Aren’t you a little young. What are you thirty-six, or thirty-seven?”. I got a good laugh out of her reaction, when I told her my age!

I have had the occasional flirtatious younger man make advances, which is always very flattering and surprising, but I think it is the confidence that an older woman carries which is appealing. If you are in good shape, comfortable in your own skin and enjoying life, what is there not to be attracted to?

I take good care of myself, eat well, exercise, take specific supplements that I personally believe to help, it is vital to feel your best and most importantly I love to laugh. Laughter is the best medicine, is another of my favorites sayings. Live long, love deeply, laugh often.

    Effective acne treatments are available

Effectice acne treatments are the friend of all teenagers

All over the world there is a terrible word in the dictionary of most teenagers. No matter what language they speak, or which country they are coming from or even what race or what social strata they belong to. It is the war against acne that is one cause that can make the teenagers of the world unite as one! If there is one thing that is the friend of all teenagers, it is effective acne treatments, following the same logic. But just as acne comes in all shapes, sizes, and places, acne treatments too range from the effective to the super efficient to the mythical. It is half the battle knowing what works and what is just a flight of fancy.

It is essential to understand what causes acne in the first place, in order to determine effective acne treatments. Most people believe acne due to poor hygiene. That’s wrong. Often acne is usually caused due to hormonal changes in the human body. Brought on by puberty some people secrete excessive oil due to the hormonal changes. This traps dirt and moisture, resulting in blackheads and acne. Sometimes, acne is brought on by the blockage of the pores or by infection. Still others may have acne as a result of poor diet. But for all kinds of acne effective acne treatments are available. However, before trying to go in for self treatment it would always be a good idea to consult a dermatologist to determine the cause of acne.

In the market there is an inconceivable range of effective acne treatments available. When you go to any drugstore or pharmacy and you will see shelves upon bright shelves of products offering splendid effective acne treatments. Most of them are effective acne lotions or treatments that may not or may eliminate your problem. But in order to find the most effective acne treatments, your doctor is the best advisor, suited to your specific acne. For various acne effective Acne treatments differ. You may end up spending a fortune on ineffective acne treatments that don’t ever seem to work, unless you are able to pin down the cause. Often the more effective acne treatments include azelaic benzoyl peroxide, acid creams and Accutane. Some other proven effective acne treatments include lotions and topical antibiotics and still some other treatments include gluconic acids and glycolic. Each of these acne treatments works for a particular kind of acne, as mentioned earlier. And the more severe the acne, the more strong the treatment.

Time is the best healer, that is the best advice anyone can give you regarding effective acne treatments. But for all others who are unwilling to let time be the healer, the drugstore is their playground. Some treatments will have to go in for prescription drugs, while common treatments could work wonders for some people.

    How to sleep well

Nothing is more frustrating than not being able to sleep. Tossing and turning. Your mind is racing, going over everything that happened today. Night noises keep you awake. What can you do? There ARE things you can do! Read on and learn some new tricks to sleep well. These tips are also known as "Sleep Hygiene."

Sleep only when sleepy -----> This reduces the time you are awake in bed.

If you can't fall asleep within 20 minutes, get up and do something boring until you feel sleepy -----> Sit quietly in the dark or read the warranty on your refrigerator. Don't expose yourself to bright light while you are up. The light gives cues to your brain that it is time to wake up.

Don't take naps -----> This will ensure you are tired at bedtime. If you just can't make it through the day without a nap, sleep less than one hour, before 3 pm.

Get up and go to bed the same time every day -----> Even on weekends! When your sleep cycle has a regular rhythm, you will feel better.

Refrain from exercise at least 4 hours before bedtime -----> Regular exercise is recommended to help you sleep well, but the timing of the workout is important. Exercising in the morning or early afternoon will not interfere with sleep.

Develop sleep rituals -----> It is important to give your body cues that it is time to slow down and sleep. Listen to relaxing music, read something soothing for 15 minutes, have a cup of caffeine free tea, do relaxation exercises.

Only use your bed for sleeping -----> Refrain from using your bed to watch TV, pay bills, do work or reading. So when you go to bed your body knows it is time to sleep. Sex is the only exception.

Stay away from caffeine, nicotine and alcohol at least 4-6 hours before bed -----> Caffeine and nicotine are stimulants that interfere with your ability to fall asleep. Coffee, tea, cola, cocoa, chocolate and some prescription and non-prescription drugs contain caffeine. Cigarettes and some drugs contain nicotine. Alcohol may seem to help you sleep in the beginning as it slows brain activity, but you will end end up having fragmented sleep.

Have a light snack before bed -----> If your stomach is too empty, that can interfere with sleep. However, if you eat a heavy meal before bedtime, that can interfere as well. Dairy products and turkey contain tryptophan, which acts as a natural sleep inducer. Tryptophan is probably why a warm glass of milk is sometimes recommended.

Take a hot bath 90 minutes before bedtime -----> A hot bath will raise your body temperature, but it is the drop in body temperature that may leave you feeling sleepy. Read about the study done on body temperature below.
Trouble Sleeping? Chill Out! - A press release from the journal Sleep about the significance in body temperature before sleep

Make sure your bed and bedroom are quiet and comfortable -----> A hot room can be uncomfortable. A cooler room along with enough blankets to stay warm is recommended. If light in the early morning bothers you, get a blackout shade or wear a slumber mask. If noise bothers you, wear earplugs or get a "white noise" machine.

Use sunlight to set your biological clock -----> As soon as you get up in the morning, go outside and turn your face to the sun for 15 minutes.
